Quick verdict

Pick the Ultra if the camera and a full-width cover screen matter. Pick the Fold8 if you want the lighter phone (201 g vs 215 g) and don't need a telephoto. Both share the same chip and memory options.

For 2026 Samsung split the Fold into two phones. They share the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chip, the same 12GB/256GB to 16GB/1TB options and One UI 9. Everything else differs. Here is the comparison using only Samsung's published numbers.

Screen shape is the real decision

Numbers hide the biggest difference. The Ultra's cover screen at 1,080 x 2,520 has the proportions of an ordinary slab phone, so typing and apps look normal when it's closed. The Fold8's 5.5-inch cover is short and wide. Inside, the Ultra is landscape-leaning, which suits video and side-by-side apps; the Fold8's inner panel is taller than it is wide.

Camera: telephoto or not

If you zoom often, the Fold8 has no optical telephoto, only its 50MP main camera's 2x optical-quality crop. The Ultra adds a true 3x lens. For people coming from a Galaxy S Ultra, that will matter.

Who should save money

If the Fold8 is cheaper where you live, it is the sensible pick for readers, note-takers and anyone who mainly uses the inner screen. The weight saving is real on a phone you hold open with one hand. Check local prices: Samsung did not publish a single global price list.

How we researched this

This is a research-based review, not a hands-on test. We did not have these phones in hand. We compared the official specification pages from Apple, Google and Samsung with launch coverage and published reviews from established outlets, and we list every source below. Where sources disagree we say so. Battery and camera claims are the makers' own figures unless we name an independent reviewer. Prices are US launch prices from the official pages and can differ at carriers and retailers.
