iPhone 18 Pro Max vs 17 Pro Max: Don't Upgrade Unless...

Quick verdict

Don't upgrade from a 17 Pro Max unless you specifically want the variable-aperture main camera or the extra battery life (Apple says 6 more hours of video). Coming from an iPhone 15 Pro Max or older? The 18 Pro Max is a clear upgrade.

Chip: A20 Pro vs A19 Pro

Both chips have 6-core CPUs. Apple now calls the A20 Pro's two fast cores "super cores". The GPU goes from 6 to 7 cores with Neural Accelerators, and the Neural Engine doubles to a dual 16-core design. In plain terms: more graphics headroom and much more on-device AI capacity, which Apple ties to its new Siri AI. The A19 Pro is still very fast for everyday use.

Camera: the variable aperture is the real story

The rear camera layout looks similar on paper: 48MP main, 48MP ultrawide, 48MP 4x telephoto on both. The difference is the main camera's aperture. The 17 Pro Max has a fixed f/1.78. The 18 Pro Max can switch between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0. The wider f/1.48 lets in more light; f/4.0 gives deeper focus for close-ups and groups. If you like controlling depth of field, this is the upgrade that matters.

Battery

Apple rates the 18 Pro Max at up to 30 hours of typical use and 45 hours of video, and says the video figure is 6 hours more than the 17 Pro Max. The trade-off is weight: 249 g vs 233 g, in the same outer size.

What stayed the same

The screen size, resolution and outer dimensions are identical, so the phones feel the same in the hand apart from the 16 g difference. Both have 18MP Center Stage front cameras. If your 17 Pro Max does everything you want, the 18 Pro Max will not change your day.

Money tips

Trade-in values for a one-year-old Pro Max are usually at their highest right after a launch, so if you are upgrading anyway, sooner is better. Apple's newsroom also lists monthly pricing in the US if you prefer to spread the cost.

Before you buy any flagship: a quick checklist

  • Check the real price, not the launch price. Carriers and retailers often discount flagships, especially around holidays and before a successor launches.
  • Pick storage carefully. 256GB is the base on all three big flagships. If you shoot a lot of 4K or ProRes video, step up a tier, because you can't add storage later.
  • Budget for a charger. The fastest charging speeds quoted by Apple and Google need an adapter sold separately.
  • Check your carrier's bands and eSIM support if you buy unlocked or import a phone.
  • Look at the update policy. Longer software support keeps a phone safe and raises resale value.
  • Protect it on day one. Glass backs and big camera bumps are expensive to repair.

Trade-ins and resale

Flagship phones lose value fastest in their first year. If you plan to trade in your old phone, do it while it is still a current or recent model, and back it up and remove your accounts before you hand it over. Carrier trade-in deals can look generous, but they are often paid as monthly bill credits that you lose if you leave early, so read the terms. Selling privately usually gets you more money but takes more effort.

Bottom line

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is a refinement, not a redesign. It keeps the 17 Pro Max's size, screen and front camera, and adds a faster A20 Pro chip, a variable-aperture main camera and, by Apple's figures, 6 more hours of video playback. For a 17 Pro Max owner, that is a nice-to-have list, not a must-have one. Keep your phone, put the money aside, and look again next year. For anyone on an iPhone 15 Pro Max or older, the gains stack up: two chip generations, better cameras and a battery that is new rather than worn. That is when an upgrade feels worth the money. Storage now goes up to 2TB on the 18 Pro Max, which matters if you shoot a lot of high-quality video.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Variable-aperture main camera
  • More battery life, per Apple
  • Faster GPU and doubled Neural Engine

Cons

  • Heavier than the 17 Pro Max
  • Same screen and design
  • Small gains for 17 Pro Max owners

Both phones are 163.4 x 78.0 x 8.75 mm, but camera layouts can differ, so check case fit before you reuse an old case. Browse cases, chargers and screen protectors at the BriskNest shop.

How we researched this

This is a research-based review, not a hands-on test. We did not have these phones in hand.
