Quick verdict
On paper, this is the longest-lasting iPhone Apple has made. Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro Max at up to 30 hours of typical use and up to 45 hours of video playback, which Apple says is 6 more hours than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. These are Apple's lab figures, not our tests. Expect less if you game, use 5G heavily or keep brightness high.

Apple's official battery numbers
| Model | Typical use | Video playback | Streamed video |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | Up to 30 hours | Up to 45 hours | Up to 40 hours |
| iPhone 18 Pro | Up to 24 hours | Up to 36 hours | Up to 33 hours |
Apple's product page says the iPhone 18 Pro Max gets up to 45 hours, "6 more hours than iPhone 17 Pro Max". Apple does not publish battery capacity in mAh on its spec page.
Why lab numbers differ from real life
Battery ratings from any phone maker come from controlled tests, such as playing the same video on a loop. That is much easier on a battery than real life, where you jump between apps, use the camera, navigate and take calls. Apple's "typical use" figure is meant to be closer to everyday use, but it is still a lab number. Use it to compare iPhones with each other, not as a promise of how long your phone will last.
What "30 hours of typical use" means for you
Nobody uses a phone non-stop for 30 hours. In practice, a rating like this usually means a full day of heavy use with charge left over, or two days for lighter users. Things that drain an iPhone faster than Apple's tests include:
- Gaming and long 4K video recording
- Weak signal, which makes the modem work harder
- High screen brightness outdoors (the display can reach 3000 nits outdoor peak)
- Hotspot use
- Navigation with the screen always on
Charging speeds
| Method | Apple's figure |
|---|---|
| Wired, 60W-capable adapter or higher | Up to 50% in around 15 minutes |
| Wired, 35W adapter or higher | Up to 50% in 30 minutes |
| MagSafe wireless | Up to 25W |
| Qi2 wireless | Up to 25W |
Apple notes the adapters are sold separately. The 15-minute figure needs a 60W-capable adapter with Adjustable Voltage Supply. An old 20W brick will charge the phone, but much more slowly.
iPhone 18 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro Max battery
Both phones share the same outer dimensions, 163.4 x 78.0 x 8.75 mm, according to Apple. The 18 Pro Max weighs 249 g versus 233 g for the 17 Pro Max, and Apple credits "more capacity and greater efficiency" for the gain. The newer A20 Pro chip is part of that efficiency story. If battery is your main reason to upgrade from a 17 Pro Max, Apple's own figure is 6 extra hours of video. That is real, but for many people it will not justify the cost of a new phone a year later.
Tips to get the most battery life
- Check the charging options under Settings > Battery if you plan to keep the phone for years
- Let Auto-Brightness do its job
- Turn off Background App Refresh for apps that don't need it
- Use Wi-Fi where you can; weak cellular signal drains power
- Use an adapter that supports fast charging, so short top-ups count
Independent tests
We have not run our own battery test, and we do not quote Apple's numbers as if they were real-world results. When you compare reviews, look for tests that state brightness, network and workload, so the numbers are comparable between phones.
Before you buy any flagship: a quick checklist
- Check the real price, not the launch price. Carriers and retailers often discount flagships, especially around holidays and before a successor launches.
- Pick storage carefully. 256GB is the base on all three big flagships. If you shoot a lot of 4K or ProRes video, step up a tier, because you can't add storage later.
- Budget for a charger. The fastest charging speeds quoted by Apple and Google need an adapter sold separately.
- Check your carrier's bands and eSIM support if you buy unlocked or import a phone.
- Look at the update policy. Longer software support keeps a phone safe and raises resale value.
- Protect it on day one. Glass backs and big camera bumps are expensive to repair.
Trade-ins and resale
Flagship phones lose value fastest in their first year. If you plan to trade in your old phone, do it while it is still a current or recent model, and back it up and remove your accounts before you hand it over. Carrier trade-in deals can look generous, but they are often paid as monthly bill credits that you lose if you leave early, so read the terms. Selling privately usually gets you more money but takes more effort.
Bottom line
Apple's numbers put the iPhone 18 Pro Max at the top of its own lineup for battery life: 30 hours of typical use against 24 hours for the iPhone 18 Pro, and 45 hours of video against 36. If battery life is the single thing you care about most in an iPhone, the Pro Max is the one to buy, and the extra 16 g over the 17 Pro Max is the price you pay for it. Pair it with a 60W-capable USB-C adapter so short top-ups count, and a MagSafe or Qi2 charger for your desk or nightstand. Then judge the phone on your own day, not on a lab chart. If you are coming from an older iPhone with a worn battery, the difference will feel much bigger than the spec sheet suggests, because battery capacity fades with age and charge cycles.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Longest battery ratings Apple has published for an iPhone
- Fast 50% top-up in about 15 minutes with the right adapter
- 25W MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging
Cons
- Heavier than the 17 Pro Max (249 g vs 233 g)
- Fastest charging needs a separately sold 60W-capable adapter
- Lab figures overstate real-world endurance
To get the 15-minute fast charge you need a 60W-capable USB-C adapter, and a MagSafe or Qi2 charger for 25W wireless. Browse cases, chargers and screen protectors at the BriskNest shop.

How we researched this
This is a research-based review, not a hands-on test. We did not have these phones in hand. We compared the official specification pages from Apple, Google and Samsung with launch coverage and published reviews from established outlets, and we list every source below. Where sources disagree we say so. Battery and camera claims are the makers' own figures unless we name an independent reviewer. Prices are US launch prices from the official pages and can differ at carriers and retailers.
