Quick verdict

S26 Ultra owners: don't plan to upgrade yet. The S27 Ultra is unannounced, and the reported changes (bigger battery, new camera bar, newer chip) are evolutionary. Owners of an S23 Ultra or older have more to gain and should wait for reviews of the S27 Ultra before buying either.

Confirmed vs rumored: read this first

The Galaxy S26 Ultra is a released phone; its specs come from Samsung and published reviews. The S27 Ultra column is built only from leaks reported in late 2026. We label it RUMOR throughout. Samsung has not confirmed any of it.

Performance

A new chip generation always benchmarks higher. The real question is whether you will notice. For messaging, social apps, maps and photos, a 2026 flagship chip will not feel slow for years. Gaming and on-device AI are where a faster chip helps most. If those are your main uses, the reported Extreme Gen 6 chip is the most interesting part of the rumor list.

Battery and charging

The rumored jump from 5,000 to 5,700 mAh is the headline. Samsung quotes up to 31 hours of video playback for the S26 Ultra. A 14% larger battery plus a more efficient 2nm chip could add meaningful time, but we will only know once reviewers run standardized tests. Reports put wired charging at 60W. Published reports for the S26 Ultra disagree on its peak (Android Central lists 60W, PhoneArena 65W), so the charging change may be small either way.

Cameras

Both phones are expected to keep a 200MP main camera, a 50MP ultrawide and a 50MP 5x telephoto. The reported change is losing the 10MP 3x lens. If that happens, the S26 Ultra will be the last Ultra with four rear cameras. For people who take a lot of 3x portraits, that is a real reason to keep the S26 Ultra.

Design and accessories

The leaked dummy shows a full-width camera bar placed higher on the back. Android Authority notes that the S26 Ultra's bump can stop magnetic Qi2 accessories from sitting flat. If you rely on magnetic chargers, stands or battery packs, this could be the most useful change of all.

Price

No S27 Ultra price has been reliably reported. The S26 Ultra kept the $1,299.99 base price of the S25 Ultra, but the 512GB and 1TB versions rose to $1,499.99 and $1,799.99 (PhoneArena). Budget for at least the same, and possibly more.

Who should upgrade

  • S26 Ultra owners: skip it unless reviews show a big battery gain.
  • S24 or S25 Ultra owners: wait for reviews; the battery and camera bar may be worth it.
  • S23 Ultra or older: either phone is a big step up. Buy the S26 Ultra on discount now, or wait a few months for the S27 Ultra.

Before you buy any flagship: a quick checklist

  • Check the real price, not the launch price. Carriers and retailers often discount flagships, especially around holidays and before a successor launches.
  • Pick storage carefully. 256GB is the base on all three big flagships. If you shoot a lot of 4K or ProRes video, step up a tier, because you can't add storage later.
  • Budget for a charger. The fastest charging speeds quoted by Apple and Google need an adapter sold separately.
  • Check your carrier's bands and eSIM support if you buy unlocked or import a phone.
  • Look at the update policy. Longer software support keeps a phone safe and raises resale value.
  • Protect it on day one. Glass backs and big camera bumps are expensive to repair.

Trade-ins and resale

Flagship phones lose value fastest in their first year. If you plan to trade in your old phone, do it while it is still a current or recent model, and back it up and remove your accounts before you hand it over. Carrier trade-in deals can look generous, but they are often paid as monthly bill credits that you lose if you leave early, so read the terms. Selling privately usually gets you more money but takes more effort.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • S26 Ultra: available now, four rear cameras, S Pen
  • S27 Ultra (rumor): bigger battery, newer chip
  • S27 Ultra (rumor): better for magnetic accessories

Cons

  • S27 Ultra specs are unconfirmed
  • S27 Ultra may drop the 3x lens
  • S26 Ultra's higher storage tiers cost more than last year

A flagship phone is expensive to repair. A good case, a screen protector and a fast charger that matches the phone's charging standard protect your investment from day one. Browse cases, chargers and screen protectors at the BriskNest shop.
